You know outside South Africa we have a super app called Mpesa. It was launched 17 years ago. Money transfers between equals are a common practice in Kenya. The reason is that there were no branches of major banks in Kenya back then. The different banks. It was an opportunity for someone from outside to offer a digital service through USSD to empower people and introduce them to the financial system of the digital age.”
When I look at the statistics today, there are almost 50,000,000 active users who transact through Mpesa every month. When Mpesa doesn’t work, the Kenyan Prime Minister calls us because Mpesa accounts for more than half of Kenya’s GDP. These banks are now an opportunity for Kenyans and other Africans.”
