Hard Fork

Categories: Blockchain

A hard fork occurs when a cryptocurrency on a distributed ledger undergoes a protocol change resulting in a permanent diversion from the legacy or existing distributed ledger. This radical change to the protocol of a blockchain network makes previously invalid blocks/transactions valid or vice versa. Thus, a hard fork is a backward incompatible upgrade to the blockchain network.
